Neapolitan Serenade

for Piano Trio

Neapolitan Serenade, the English for the original German title Neapolitanisches Ständchen and popularized as O mia bella Napoli was a song composed by Gerhard Winkler. In the form of an art song and tango it achieved tremendous popularity throughout Europe and the rest of the world and as such received dozens of different arrangements, perhaps the most popular ones were for salon orchestra and piano trio. Even a movie was made based on the song. The lyrics begin with the words, "My beautiful Naples, were I but there again, I would stay forever, the cypresses so dark, the perfume of flowers in the air."

Gerhard Winkler (1906-1977) was born in German town Rixdorf am Stadtrand near Berlin. He began composing at the age of seven and entered the Englerschen Conservatory in Berlin where he studied piano, violin and composition. After graduating, he pursued a career as a salon orchestra player and composer for films and operettas.
