Sonata for Violin and Piano in a minor
Alice Tegner (1864-1943) was born in the Swedish town of Karlshamn. She studied piano with Ludvig Norman in Stockholm and composition with Johan Lindegren. Tegner made her name as a writer of childrens songs many of which are still popular in Sweden today. She had gift for melody which can be heard in her violin sonata.
The Sonata for Violin and Piano in a minor is in four movements and dates from 1901. The opening movement, Allegro, is by turns dramatic and lyrical. The Menuetto which serves as the second movement sounds a bit like a toy soldiers march. In the sad Andante which comes next her melodic gift is on display. The finale, Allegro, makes a fitting conclusion to this fine work
This sonata is a good as any from this time period coming out of Scandinavia. It will do well in recital and should be of interest to both professionals and amateurs.
