Morceau de Concert, Op.45 for Violin & Piano
Emil Sjögren (1853-1918) was trained as an organist and studied composition in Stockholm and Berlin. He made his career as an organist and many of his compositions are for that instrument. Today he is primarily remembered as a composer of songs, however, his works for solo piano as well as for violin and piano are very well thought of.
The Morceau de Concert was composed in 1905 while Sjögren was sojourning in Paris. It is based on a folk song and a dance which were well-known in Swedish circles. It was intended as a recital vehicle for the then well-known Swedish violinist Sven Kjellstrom. In it, Sjögren shows how imaginatively he could handle the thematic material, creating a work which might well be subtitled Rhapsody.
