Emil Sjögren
Cello Sonata in A Major, Op.58
Emil Sjögren (1853-1918) along with the better known Hugo Wolf was widely regarded as the finest art song writer since Franz Schubert. He wrote several song cycles which were performed throughout Europe during the last decades of the 19th century and the first of the 20th when the genre of the art song was much in vogue and heard in recitals. As with Schubert and Hugo Wolf, Sjögren had an extraordinary gift for melody.
This gift for melody can readily be heard also in his instrumental works which were primarily for violin and piano. His Cello Sonata in A Major is a late work composed in 1911 and published the following year. It exhibits all of the same qualities as his songs.
Long out of print, we are please to present this fine work to cellists who will find this a satisfying choice for recital as well as study.
