Heinrich Kaspar Schmid
Quintet in B flat Major, Op.28
For Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, and Bassoon
Heinrich Kaspar Schmid's Quintet for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, and Bassoon in B flat Major, Op.28 was completed in 1921 and dedicated to his friend Adolf Martini, a German business man. It is three movements and is written in a post romantic style. The opening movement, Allegro, is bright and lively, occasionally interspersed with more relaxed and lyrical sections. The middle movement, Grazioso amabile, begins in an elegant and genial mood but later is interrupted by a more excited section. The finale, begins with a leisurely Moderato introduction which leads to the main section (where our soundbite begins) which full of energy and forward motion. The part-writing leaves nothing to be desired. Each of the instruments is given several grateful solo chances throughout this fine work.
Heinrich Kaspar Schmid (1874-1953) was born in the Bavarian town of Landau on the Isar, about 80 miles south of Munich. He began his musical studies with his father and then trained as a singer in the boys’ choir at Regensburg Cathedral. He then attened the Royal Conservatory of Music in Munich were he studied composition with Ludwig Thuille. Shortly thereafter he obtained a teaching position there and in 1919 a professorship. In 1921 he became director of the Karlsruhe Conservatory and then director of the Augsburg Music School in 1924. Schmid's music, though written in a post-Brahmsian style, tended to show the influence of the late Romantic composers rather than contemporary trends in composition. In addition to this work, he composed a string quartet and several trios for various instruments.
Long out of print, we are pleased to make it available once again. It will do well in the concert hall but presents no great technical difficulties. It makes an attractive compliment to the wind quintets by Theodor Blumer, Franz Danzi, Josef Bohuslav Theodor Blumer, Franz Danzi, Josef Bohuslav Foerster, August Klughardt, George Onslow, and Johann Sobeck, all for the same combination and available from Edition Silvertrust.
