Quartet No.5 in G Major for Bassoon, Violin, Viola & Cello, Op.1 No.5--New Edition
Georg
Wenzel Ritter (1748-1808) was born in the German city of Mannheim. His father
Heinrich was principal bassoonist in that famous orchestra. Georg learned the
bassoon from his father and was soon a member of the orchestra. He became known
as one of the leading bassoon players of his time and held positions in several
orchestras. Virtually all of his composition were for his own instrument. Today,
Ritter is remembered as a friend of Mozart. Mozart, Johann Christian Bach and
several other composers wrote works with him in mind.
Ritter completed six quartets for Bassoon and String Trio sometime between 1777 and 1778 and they were published by Parisian firm of Sieber e following year in 1779. They were dedicated to the Henri Roland Lancelot Marquis de Turpin, a patron of the arts and amateur painter. The Quartet has, like all of the set, two movements. The opening movement is lively Allegro. The work closes with a stately Minuetto. Our new edition is based on that of the original Sieber Edition found in the Bibliotheque National in Paris.
