String Quartet No.2 in B flat Major, Op.11
“It would be an injustice if I did not describe the string quartets of Richard Perger, a student of Brahms. His quartets, with their beautiful construction, can be likened to those of Herzogenberg. The Second Quartet dates from 1887. The opening Vivace non troppo, ma con brio, begins with a powerful and fetching theme. The second movement, Andantino con moto, is a veritable river of melody. An orignal and inspired Presto with trio comes next which is then followed by an Allegro moderato which is particularly interesting in its construction."---Wilhelm Altmann writing in his Chamber Music Handbook
Richard von Perger (1854-1911) was born in the Austrian city of Graz. He studied composition in Vienna with several teachers, including Brahms, whose influence can often be felt in his music. His career was divided between composing, conducting and teaching. He served as director of the Rotterdam Conservatory and later the Vienna Conservatory as well as the Wiener Singverein(Vienna Choral Society) and the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. He wrote in most genres and his chamber music, in particular, was held in high regard.
The ideas one finds in this quartet are original to the composer and are executed in an assured manner. This engaging work would do well in concert but should also be of interest to amateurs looking for something fresh from the late Romantic period. Out of print for nearly a century, we are pleased to make it available once again.
