The first movement, Allegro con fuoco, has a definite lilt and is full of clear writing. The Andante, which comes next, is a lovely song without words and a pleasure to play. An appealing and sparkling Scherzo, full of vitality, comes next. It is rounded off by a finely contrasting lyrical trio. Luise Adolpha Le Beau (1850-1927) was born in the German town of Rastatt. She began to study the piano with her father. Subsequently she studied composition with Johann Kalliwoda and piano with Clara Schumann after which she began a career as a piano soloist. She broke off her performing career to further her composition studies with Josef Rheinberger and Franz Lachner. She composed in most genres with chamber music playing an important part of her oeuvre. In addition to this piano trio, she has a piano quartet, a string quartet and string quintet as well as several instrumental sonatas to her credit. Her works won several prizes and were well regarded by such luminaries as Liszt, Berlioz, Bargiel, Joachim and several others.
We looked for a set of parts to this very fine work for many years. Eventually we were able to obtain a copy of a set of the original parts but as you might expect the 135 year old parts had faded in places and there were all sorts of water marks, smudges, detritus and fingerings. We have spent many hours digitally cleaning, darkening, removing fingerings and correcting errors and have been able to create a serviceable performance edition in order to rescue this very fine piano trio from oblivion. But, it is not pristine like a newly published work nor the equal in quality of a modern edition. The price, less than our generally very low prices, reflects this fact. Long out of print and unavailable, we are pleased to reintroduce it once again. It deserves to be heard in concert and amateurs will certainly appreciate the fact that this fine work presents no real technical difficulties.
