Carl Matthias Kudelski
String Trio in G Major, Op.32
Carl Matthias Kudelski (1805-1877) was born in Berlin where he studied the violin and composition. In his day, Kudelski was a well-known violinist and conductor holding various posts including concertmaster and director of the St. Petersburg Opera. He also performed for several years as first violinist in a prominent string quartet performing in the Baltic provinces. Kudelski wrote several instrumental concertos, which enjoyed considerable popularity for a time, and a fair amount of chamber music. His String Trio in G Major, Op.32 dates from the 1840's and was described by The Chamber Music Journal as follows:
“The name Carl (or Karl) Kudelski has all but disappeared and today can only be found in a few old German biographical dictionaries of musicians. Judging from his fine String Trio in G Major, Op.32 for violin, viola and cello, it is hard to know why this happened. Here is an exciting, dramatic and original-sounding work from the mid-romantic period, in this case somewhere around 1845, which is as good as anything for this combination from the same era. The part-writing is extremely good for each of the instruments which are treated as equals. Perhaps this is to be expected since Kudelski was the leader of a string quartet for more than a decade. The trio begins with a slow, somewhat ominous Andante introduction in the minor, but the main part of the movement, Allegro con brio, is full of verve and forward motion. The second movement, Allegretto con moto, is a clever and fresh intermezzo. A slow movement, Andante, comes next beginning in a dramatic fashion but transforming itself into a valedictory, complete with a dramatic middle section. The riveting finale, Allegro ma non troppo is exciting from start to finish."
This trio could certainly be performed in concert and will without doubt also provide much pleasure for amateur groups. It was popular enough, during the 19th century to receive a second edition, not just a reprint of the inferior first edition. Nonetheless, the 2nd edition still had no rehearsal numbers, but we have remedied this. We are pleased to make this fine work available after a long hiatus and warmly recommend it to amateurs and professionals alike.
