Viktor Kalinnikov
Two Miniatures for String Quartet
Viktor Kallinikov (1870-1927), the younger brother of the symphonist and better known Vassily Kallinikov, was born in the Russian town of Oryol. He studied composition at the Moscow Philharmonic Society School with Alexander Illynsky. He worked as a theater director and subsequently taught at the Moscow Conservatory. He was primarily known for his choral works, especially those he composed for the Russian Orthodox Church. His two miniatures were composed in 1896 and other than a small suite for piano trio are the only chamber music he wrote.
As the title suggests, these are small work. Charming and ingratiating, either together or separately, they make fine encores.
