Sonata No.1 for Violin and Piano in d minor
John Ireland (1879-1962) was born in the English village of Bowdon near the city of Manchester. After studying at the Royal College of Music in London with Charles Villiers Stanford, he pursued a career as a composer and teacher eventually obtaining a position at the College. His Violin Sonata No.1 in d minor dates from 1909. It was published in 1911 and entered it in the third Cobbett Competition and took first prize. As the judges noted, it showed great originality with its use of large spanning phrases, varied textures, interesting melodies and varying moods. It is in three movements: Allegro leggiadro, Romance quasi adagio and Rondo, allegro sciolto assai.
