Swan Hennessy
Serenade for String Quartet, Op.65
Edward Swan Hennessy (1866-1929) was born in Rockford, Illinois and grew up in Chicago. It is not known where his early music education took place, though presumably it was in Chicago. Some sources suggest he studied at Oxford before attending the Stuttgart Conservatory. He lived in London for several years and finally settled in Paris in 1903. While his earlier works were firmly in the Romantic style a la Schumann, his later works were all influenced by the French Impressionists.
The Serenade dates from 1924. It was dedicated to the leader of the quartet which introduced his works in concert. In one movement, it begins with a somber Andante introduction which leads to the main section and Allegro which bears some resemblance to an Irish dance. The work then concludes with another Andante, sad and lyrical. The Sereande makes a perfect encore or shorter program work. It presents no technical difficulties and can be recommended to amateurs as well as professionals.
