Deux Pièces or Two Pieces for Clarinet and Piano
Marie Félicie Clémence de Grandval (1828-1907) also known as Vicomtesse de Grandval and Marie Grandval was born near the French village ofs at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts. As a young girl, she received composition lessons from composer and family friend Friedrich Flotow, and later studied privately with Frédéric Chopin and Camille Saint-Saëns. Because of her social position and the time in which she lived, she published many of her works under pseudonyms. She won the prestigious Prix Rossini in 1881 and her compositions were quite popular during the last decades of the 19th century.
The Two Pieces for Clarinet and Piano date from 1881. The first movement, subtitled Invocation, uses the clarinet to express a meditative mood, while the second, entitled Air Slave (Slav) is a loping, somewhat slinky intermezzo.
