Violin Sonata No.4 in E Major, Op.77
Fuchs' Violin Sonata No.4 in E Major dates from 1905. In three movements, the opening Allegro vivace is rather unconventional in that the main subject takes rather a long time to fully appear. The second movement, Andante con espressione has for its main section a lyrical song-like character but the middle section in the minor is rather more turbulent. The finale movement, Allegretto con delicatezza, with its appealing wayward melodies show a rather complex texture.
Robert Fuchs (1847-1927) was born near the Styrian capital of Graz and attended the University of Vienna Conservatory studying with Otto Dessoff and Joseph Hellmesberger. By 1875, he himself was teaching at the Conservatory, eventually rising to the rank of Professor of Composition. He was one of the most famous and revered teachers of his time. Mahler, Sibelius, Hugo Wolf, Franz Schmidt, Alexander Zemlinsky, Franz Schrecker and Richard Heuberger were among his many students.
This sonata, like vitually all of Fuchs's works shows his great craftmanship and meticulous compositional ability. Unavailable for many years are pleased to bring back.
