Rosalind Ellicott
Piano Trio No.1 in G Major
Rosalind Ellicott (1857-1924) was born in the English town of Cambridge, Her first lessons were from Samuel Wesley. Later, she studied piano and voice at the Royal Academy of Music in London and subsequently had a career as a vocal soloist in oratorios and cantatas. Her early works were mostly for chorus and orchestra were cast in a Romantic style. But in the late 1880s she turned her attention to chamber music.
Her two piano trios, piano quartet and violin sonata were all premiered with considerable success and for a while were regularly performed not only in England but also in Germany. Not much of her work seems to have survived other than some of her chamber music and songs. Her Piano Trio No.1 is in three movements and dates from 1889. The opening movement, Allegro grazioso, is charming, elegant and graceful. The beautiful middle movement, Adagio, is without question the trio’s center of gravity. At times a sad dirge, at other times dramatic and lyrical, it exhibits fine part-writing throughout. The finale, Allegro brillante, jovial and triumphant.
The work is full of gorgeous melodies and excellent part-writing. Long out of print, we are pleased to bring it back once again. It deserves to be revived and heard in the concert hall and in the homes of amateur ensembles.
