String Quartet in B flat Major, Op.6 No.2 "Figaro"-New Edition
Franz Danzi (1763-1826) today is only known for his wind quintets which over the past few decades have been resuscitated and gained popularity among wind players for their ease of performance and fine melodic writing. However, he wrote works in virtually every genre. His chamber music includes sextets, quintets, quartets and trios, some for strings, some for wind instruments and some for a combination of the two. He was born near and grew up in Mannheim and studied cello with his father and composition with Abt Vogler before he joined the famous Mannheim orchestra of the Elector in 1778. His career spanned the transition from the late Classical to the early Romantic styles. Danzi knew Mozart and mentored Carl Maria von Weber. In 1783, Danzi succeeded his father as one of the conductors of Elector’s orchestra. He eventually rose to the position of Kapellmeister at the courts in Munich and later Stuttgart. His works reflect thea style from his own early experience in Mannheim.
The String Quartet in B flat Major, Op.6 No.2 was the second of a set of three first published in 1801. It received the nickname “Figaro Quartet” because Danzi quoted the theme from the aria Non piu andrai from Mozart’s opera The Marriage of Figaro. It also quotes from .Cherubini's canzona Voi che sapete. It is in two movements. The first is marked Andante is actually a theme and set of variations. The concluding movement, Allegro moderato, sounds like a lively rendition for quartet of scenes from Mozart’s opera.
