Aaron Copland
Two Pieces for String Quartet
Aaron Copland (1900-1990) was born in Brooklyn, New York City. He is widely considered one of the most important American coposers of the 20th century. In New York, he studied composition with Rubin Goldmark before journeying to Paris where he continued his studies with the famous composition teacher Nadia Boulanger among others.
Other than one manuscript movement only discovered shortly before his death, the Two Pieces for String Quartet are the only works for this genre he wrote. They date from 1928. The first piece, Lento molto is dedicated to his friend the American composer Roy Harris a fellow student of Boulanger. As the title suggests the Lento is slow, introspective, featuring strong chordal progressions which build to climaxes. Boulanger called it a masterpiece that was simple, moving and deep. The second piece, Rondino, is dominated by its angular rhythm which keeps the music moving along from start to finish.
An important American work in the post Romantic style. It can serve as a concert choice where a shorter program pieces is required. And it is not beyond experienced amateur players.
