Wind Quintet in g minor
Hedwige Chretien (1859-1944) was born in the French town of Compiègne, she was appointed professor of music theory at the Paris Conservatoire in 1889 where she had previously been a student for nearly 15 years. Her books on key changes and music theory are still in use today. While as a student, she won first prize in harmony, counterpoint and fugue as well as prizes in piano and in composition. She was a prolific composerpenning some 250 works. Her chamber music includes a piano trio, a quintet for winds, this quintet and several instrumental sonatas.
The Wind Quintet was composed in 1887 and dedicated to Emile Pessard, an opera composer and professor of harmony at the Paris Conservatory. There are two movements. The opening movement, Andante, has an oriental-dance-like tune for its main theme. The music is elegant and genial. The concluding movement is an upbeat light-hearted Allegro con moto,
Chretien's lovely Quintet is an ideal work for the concert hall and as it presents no technical difficulties and is an excellent choice ideal for amateurs as well as professionals.
