Jugendtrio for Violin, Violoncello & Piano in G Major, Op.66
Information about Max Burger (1856-1917) is hard to come by. None of the standard or non-standard music dictionaries and encyclopedias mention his name. Only after considerable research were we able to learn that Burger was born in the Bavarian town of Oberalting not far from Munich. After completing his music studies, Burger worked as a music teacher in the Bavarian towns of Rosenheim and Freising before obtaining the post of Königlicher Seminaroberlehrer (Royal Seminary Senior Instructor) in the city of Bamberg where he spent most of his life teaching at the various music institutions in that city. Burger was particularly interested in writing pedagogical works for students.
His Jugendtrio (or trio for young persons) was composed in 1908 and dedicated to his cousin Hans Berr, who was the head music teacher at the Bamberg Gymnasium. It is in four movements--Allegro moderato, Andante con espressione, Tempo di menuetto, and Rondo, allegretto. The work is beautifully written, and though intended for advanced students and amateurs, this work is strong enuogh to be presented in the concert hall.
